Technical Specifications

Can anyone recommend any resources, books or sites etc, on how to plan
out projects? Most of my work is web-based projects that take four or
five weeks, and I see technical specifications as a way to plan out what
I'll do first, do some prototyping, and make sure my client and I are on
the same page.

I'm looking for something that has a detailed process I can follow, has
ideas about different documents that should be produced in this case,
and so on - any ideas appreciated
