In getting my first work permit, I used an immigration lawyer here in 
London whose name doesn't escape me but whose contact details do.  The 
second time, the HR dept of my job just did it themselves.

If you're desperate for a lawyer, email me and I'll have a rummage around.

It basically involved getting some recommendation letters and writing up 
some bullshit.
