Debian is being hateful

I run Debian testing on one of my machines, and it's been a month or so
since I last updated it, so ...

  $ sudo apt-get upgrade
  ...
  Preparing to replace libc6 2.3.6.ds1-13 (using
  .../libc6_2.5-9+b1_i386.deb) ...
  WARNING: POSIX threads library NPTL requires kernel version
  2.6.1 or later. If you use a kernel 2.4, please upgrade it
  before installing glibc.
  dpkg: error ...

Fair enough, time for a kernel upgrade:

  $ sudo apt-get install kernel-image-2.6-686
  You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these:
  The following packages have unmet dependencies.
    binutils: Depends: libc6 (>= 2.5-5) but 2.3.6.ds1-13 is to be
      installed
    ...
  E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages

OK, I'll try that then:

  $ sudo apt-get -f install
  ...
  The following extra packages will be installed:
    libc6
  ...
  WARNING: POSIX threads library NPTL requires kernel version
  2.6.1 or later. If you use a kernel 2.4, please upgrade it
  before installing glibc.
  ...
  E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

Stupid piece of shit. Any clues about how to fix it?
