To be fair, when people say they need to handle thousands of hits a
second, on the whole they either believed a particularly enthusiastic
client who thinks they've got the next big thing, and/or they don't have
much experience administering real-life web sites. Or they *are* a
particularly enthusiastic client who thinks they've got the next big thing.

You have to mentally filter out the exaggeration down to "a lot of traffic".

If you've really been hired to deal with that kind of load, then you
*already* know about mod_perl and FastCGI and squid and probably the
Danga stuff and everything else. That's why they hired you. If you don't
already know that stuff, something's wrong.
